Hi, I’m Randy—founder of Nawalee (formerly Happi Coffee).

A few years ago, I visited a coffee farm in the highlands of Guatemala—my homeland—and it completely changed how I saw coffee. I watched the care, effort, and risk farmers pour into every step of the process. These are people who work incredibly hard to get everything right, yet the system rarely works in their favor.

That experience stayed with me.

I came home with a deeper appreciation for the land, the people, and the spirit behind every great cup. And as Happi grew, something became clear - we needed a name and identity that could carry the full weight of that story. Something rooted. Something meaningful. Something uniquely ours as we continue to grow.

That’s what led us from Happi to Nawalee.

Nawalee comes from the Mayan idea of the Nawal—a guiding spirit that connects each of us to the world around us. That idea captures everything we care about: honoring origins, celebrating people, and creating coffee that feels soulful, intentional, and deeply connected.

Our new brand icon, the resplendent quetzal, brings that meaning to life. In Mayan tradition, the quetzal represents freedom, spirit, and the living energy of the natural world. It’s considered a Nawal itself—a sacred guide. For us, it symbolizes the spirit behind every origin we source from, and the heritage that inspires our journey.

Why the Name Nawalee?

As Happi continued to grow, we realized we needed a name that did more than feel joyful—we needed one that reflected our roots, our values, and the spirit behind our coffee.

Nawalee is inspired by the Mayan belief in the Nawal (nah-wahl)—the spirit that reflects who you are at your core and how you move through the world.

We believe coffee carries a spirit too.

Every region has its own energy.

Every farm has its own rhythm.

Every community has its own story.

And every cup carries a piece of all of it.

That’s why our brand icon is the Resplendent Quetzal—the sacred bird of the Maya, symbolizing spirit, freedom, and connection to the natural world. To us, it embodies the guiding essence behind our coffee: vibrant, alive, and deeply rooted in culture and place.
